So, my partner get me this book for Christmas and, well, I've just finished reading it and it's amazing. It really gives you an insite on S&M and gives good descriptions on how to go about it yourself.

I was never confident at what I should be doing when it came to S&M but this book gave me so much confidence to try it out in the bedroom and, well, my partner loved it and so did I.

    1. Be Your Own Windkeeper

Reviewed: 16 January 2016 by Zariel, a Bisexual Going Steady Female

As someone who has been a BDSM switch with my partner for many years now (and one who is always interested in some general self-improvement), I was curious as to what this book offered to the non-vanilla.

And whilst I don't doubt that this book could help the very meek, inexperienced or prudish, for me the content seemed a statement of the obvious (lots of "be yourself", "love yourself", "dance like no-one's watching" types of soundbite).

As the title suggests, it simply reminded me of the "Be Your Own Windkeeper" book from an episode of Friends - look it up if need be. For someone who is starting out on their empowerment journey this book may help, but it was all stuff I've heard before.

The quotes from famous people scattered through the book are a nice touch, and for those who find BDSM intimidating the author is very gentle and welcoming so you won't feel grossed out or overwhelmed.

Personally I'd much rather recommend Google or those seeking general empowerment, which is a free resource. I think this may be my main issue with the book: it didn't offer any exclusive information or insights you couldn't get for free. However, I know that some prefer the written word and to feel a book in their hands, so fair play. It is a nice looking book - hardcover, good quality paper.

Please know that this is just my opinion, and if The Little Vanilla Book is the thing that gets your groove back and helps you to become more self-assured in general or when starting out in BDSM, then wonderful! I see that a fellow reviewer found it a good introduction to S&M for themselves and I couldn't be happier for them. However, it isn't my cup of tea and perhaps is more for the absolute novice than the non-vanilla.

Honestly, I was expecting something with a bit more naughty humour, an S&M version of The Little Book of Calm, if you will. It was not. It isn't a tiny book you can dip in and out of for a quick fix tip like the Little Book of Calm, it is a chaptered book about the size of an iPad mini.

    2. Overall Rating:
      8 out of 10 stars
Good quality paper, information good for novices, gentle introduction to BDSM for nervous vanilla people.
I didn't learn anything new, all seemed like stuff you can learn for free.
      Bottom line
If Google is the undergraduate degree of BDSM self-help, this book is a GCSE.
