Coco de Mer Snap Dragon Whip
This Dragon breathes glue, not fire
Reviewed: 22 July 2016 by Shadow Collector
Coco De Mer is a ‘luxury brand’ and as such demands a premium price for (supposedly) premium products. I don’t mind this, it’s as good a business incentive as any, but if you plan to charge £120 for a whip I expect it to be flawless. This… wasn’t. And it could have been so easily, but it was let down by a complete lack of attention to detail. In short, don’t waste your money. Even if you are surreptitiously treating yourself in conjunction with sneaky discount codes like I did, it’s not worth the price being asked. I’ve found better put together hitty toys for £15 elsewhere on the site.
For a high-end brand, not much effort is put into the packaging. Usually I don’t mind this at all (in fact, I tend to prefer it) but, let’s face it, you’re paying for the experience as much as the product. You’re paying for elegance and a sense of grandeur that frankly isn’t delivered on when you first pull it out of the discreet Lovehoney postage box.
When I had it out for the first time I was severely unimpressed. The first thing I noticed was the lumpy dried glue on the handle of the toy. It’s a beautiful wooden handle that they’ve clearly put effort into designing to fit the hand comfortably, cutting and varnishing, to let it down with something as cheap and easily fixed as leaking glue proves how little attention to detail is put into the Quality Assurance.
The Snap Dragon is very effective in use, if you know how to handle it. With practise you can deliver agonising snaps that feel like your back has been cut open, but don’t be fooled. If you don’t know what you’re doing you could end up injuring yourself or your partner. These type of whips are notoriously difficult to master. Bear that in mind. If you know what you’re getting in to, the whip ticks all the boxes in terms of effectiveness.
It seems to be durable, at least. I believe that with a minimal level of respect, care and common sense the whip is likely to be an operative part of my toybox for years to come. That is a redeeming quality and perhaps the only justification for the price asked, perhaps by the fifth year or so it will have paid me back in enough stinging hits to have been worth the purchase. Other than that, I was left incredibly underwhelmed with the Coco De Mer Snap Dragon. I fell in love with it when I first saw it on the what’s new page… what can I say, we all make mistakes.
